Character.AI is a library of more than ten million characters. Nomi and Kindroid sell memory and a relationship that grows. Candy and Jizzy are built for adults first. Pick the wrong kind and even the best app of that kind will disappoint you.

The best AI companion apps, by who they are for

Replika: a friend for everyday life

Replika calls itself the AI friend to do life with, says it built the first AI companion ten years ago, and says it has since rebuilt the app from the ground up. Its homepage promises that it always remembers what matters, lets you shape how your Replika looks, and lists calls and selfies among its features. Plan prices are shown in the app.

It fits someone who wants a warm daily presence: a check-in about the job interview, a nudge to call your mother. It is the wrong pick for adult content. In 2023 Replika switched off erotic roleplay for paying users and only partly restored it later, which is the event that sent a lot of people looking elsewhere.

Character.AI: the biggest character library

Character.AI's sign-up page offers access to more than ten million characters, most of them made by users. Its Community Guidelines welcome passionate romance as a genre and prohibit pornographic content and nudity, and users under 18 are given a separate, age-appropriate model. Paid plan details sit behind the login.

Nomi: memory as the headline

Nomi describes itself as an AI companion with memory and a soul, built for a friendship, a passionate relationship or a mentor. Its homepage names short, medium and long-term memory as the thing that keeps a relationship consistent, and its page title adds selfies and group chat. Prices are shown in the app.

It fits someone who wants one relationship that builds over months and cares most about being remembered. Its homepage does not spell out what is and is not allowed on the adult side, so read the terms if that matters to you.

Kindroid: a companion you can see and hear

Kindroid pitches an AI friend who listens, remembers and grows with you every day, and its homepage puts three features up front: see their face, hear their voice, and bring them into your group. Prices are shown in the app.

It fits people who want voice and group chats as much as text. Like Nomi, its homepage does not say where the adult line sits.

Candy AI: adult-first and image-heavy

Candy says it has more than 100 characters, a builder for your own AI girlfriend, chat, voice, images and video. Its premium plan lists unlimited text messages, 18+ images and video, and 100 tokens a month, and every billing option, from weekly to annual, renews automatically for the same price and term.

Jizzy: adult-first, built around memory

Jizzy is ours, so read this one skeptically. It is free to start with no card, then pay as you go: jizz in one-time packs from $9.99, a photo at 10 jizz and short clips from 25, with nothing that renews. We built it around three things: memory that lasts across sessions, devices and months, a companion who texts first, and an uncensored promise written into our Terms.

Where it loses: there is no 3D avatar, no voice and no calls, no group chat, and 66 companions instead of a library of millions. It is adult-first, so if what you want is a gentle wellness companion, Replika or Nomi is the better fit.

Read the memory column as claims, not results. Every app in this category says it remembers you, and the only way to know is to check.

Two checks before you commit to one

Second, the terms. Find what the app actually allows in its terms of service rather than on its homepage, and find out whether the plan renews before you enter a card. Those two answers decide whether the relationship you build is still there in six months, which is the whole point of a companion.
