Janitor AI Alternatives, for the Things Janitor Can't Do
Janitor has the community and the characters. It also has an 8,000-token memory you manage by hand. Four alternatives, sorted by what you are missing.

People who search for Janitor AI alternatives usually love the characters and hit a wall somewhere else: a bot that forgets what happened forty messages ago, or an evening lost to proxy settings. Below is what Janitor genuinely does better than almost anyone, where it runs out, and four alternatives sorted by the thing you are missing. One of them is Jizzy, which is ours, so weigh that entry accordingly.
Every fact about another platform comes from its own website or help center, read on October 15, 2026, and the links are in the sources at the end. We did not test paid plans for this piece.
What Janitor does better than almost anyone
Janitor describes itself as a platform for creators building immersive worlds and readers looking for living stories, and its homepage counts more than 15 million users. That is the real draw. The characters are made by the community and sorted under dozens of tags, from magical and sci-fi to horror and comedy, so there is almost always someone new to talk to.
It is also flexible about the model behind the character. Janitor runs its own model, JLLM, and its help center includes guides for connecting other models through a proxy, pointing to OpenRouter as the easiest free option. No price appears anywhere on its public pages or in its help center. If variety and tinkering are what you want, Janitor is hard to beat, and the alternatives below each give up some of that.
Where Janitor runs out
Memory is the honest weak spot, and Janitor's own help center says so. Its article on chat memory puts JLLM's context window at around 8,000 to 9,000 tokens, which is a few thousand words of conversation. Past that, older messages fall out of view and the bot starts forgetting things.
The fix it recommends is manual. You keep a memory template with sections for the plot, the relationship and important past events, write recaps by asking the model to summarize, and trim the notes when the bot loses track. The help center compares good memory to your best set of sticky notes. That works, and it is also homework, every night, for every character.
Janitor AI alternatives by what you are missing
More memory on a character site: SpicyChat
SpicyChat keeps the shape Janitor users know: user-made characters, and a docs section with a guide to importing characters. Its paid tiers state their memory plainly. Get a Taste, at $5.95 a month, lists 4K context, which is less than JLLM's window. True Supporter, at $19.95, doubles that to 8K, and I'm All In, at $29.95, goes to 32K.
Choose it if you want the library feel with a memory you can buy more of. Skip the first tier if memory is the reason you are leaving. If SpicyChat is where you are already, its own alternatives are in SpicyChat alternatives.
A free tier with the limits written down: CrushOn
CrushOn's pricing page lists exactly what its free plan includes: 100 message credits a month, 8K memory and 200 stored messages per character. It also warns that free chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity. Paid plans start at $4.90 a month billed annually and unlock 16K and 24K memory models higher up.
Choose it if you want to see the limits before you commit. Watch the 7-day rule if you tend to disappear for a week.
Full control on your own machine: SillyTavern
SillyTavern calls itself an LLM frontend for power users. It is open source under the AGPL-3.0 license, installs on your own computer, and connects to local backends such as KoboldAI and KoboldCpp or hosted APIs such as OpenRouter, OpenAI, Claude and Mistral.
Choose it if the proxy setup on Janitor did not scare you and you want every setting in your hands. The trade is that you supply the model, and memory is still yours to manage.
One companion who remembers by herself: Jizzy
Jizzy is ours and takes the opposite approach to Janitor: one companion and a relationship, instead of a library and a scene. Her memory runs across sessions, devices and months without a template to maintain, she texts first, and the uncensored commitment is written into our Terms. It is free to start with no card, then pay as you go with no subscription.
Where it loses: there are no community characters, no importing, and 66 companions rather than an endless feed. You can design your own in the builder, but you are building one person, not a cast. Adults only.
Whichever you try, give it the same test before you pay: plant a fact, a feeling and a joke on night one, come back three days later, and see what it remembers without being asked. For the wider map of where people go from filtered platforms, see Character AI alternatives.
FAQ
What is the best Janitor AI alternative?
It depends on what you are missing. For the same character-site feel with more memory, SpicyChat's higher tiers. For a free plan with its limits written down, CrushOn. For full control on your own machine, SillyTavern. For one companion who remembers you without a memory template, Jizzy, which is ours.
Why does Janitor AI forget things?
Its own model, JLLM, holds a context window of around 8,000 to 9,000 tokens, according to Janitor's help center. Once a chat runs past that, older messages fall out of view. The help center recommends keeping a memory template and asking the model for recaps to work around it.
Is there a Janitor AI alternative with better memory?
Several publish bigger numbers. SpicyChat lists 8K context at $19.95 a month and 32K at $29.95, and CrushOn offers 16K and 24K memory models on paid plans. Companion apps like Jizzy keep long-term memory across sessions and months instead of relying on a context window alone.
Can I move my characters from Janitor to another site?
Sometimes. SpicyChat's documentation includes a guide to importing characters. Jizzy does not import characters; you would rebuild her in the builder from her look, her personality and how she knows you.
Is Janitor AI free?
Janitor's public pages and help center do not list a price. Its own model, JLLM, runs on the site, and the help center points people who want a different model to OpenRouter, which it calls the easiest free option.
